Happy Father's Day!

Biblical Fathers:

 Joseph (father of Jesus)

  • Chosen by God to be the earthly father of Jesus (Matthew 1:18-25) & (Luke 2:41-52)
  • Scripture: Matthew 1:20-21 - "But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.'"

Elkanah (father of Samuel):

  • Elkanah is known for his devoutness and prayerfulness (1 Samuel 1:1-28)
  • Scripture: 1 Samuel 1:27-28 - "I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there."

The Prodigal Son's Father

  • While not named, the father in the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) represents God's unconditional love and forgiveness.
  • Scripture: Luke 15:20 - "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him."

And of course, the most important Father to remember on Father's Day...God the Father!
"The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.' The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children." (Romans 8:15-16 (NIV)

Happy Father's Day!
